I have just started coaching 20 9year olds at my daughters?

I have just started coaching 20 9year olds at my daughters school. 18 of them havn't played any netball. I have started teaching them the basic ball handling skills, shooting and we are working on the rules. I have limited time to get them ready for their first game due to alot of our training days falling on public holidays. We had our first mini game at training last week and it was ciaos. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can try and teaching them the rules while having a mock game without a mass of confusion??

What a headache!!! Do you have anyone to help you out? Maybe grab a mum or older sister to help with passes or simply get them to focus on a group of kids to give pointers when you having your mock games. Is there another team you could have a scratch match against? Maybe playing them (shadowing them) with more experienced players could benefit? What I do at the beginning of the season, instead of making the kids run laps of the court, ask them to locate different positions of the court by running to them when called out. This way it refreshes/re-enforces the info you've been plugging into them. Maybe give them sheets on how the game is played and what positions do what. most of the time the kids are so enthusiastic they'll go home and study up on it themselves. Just don't forget the basics - footwork, passing, catching.. working together as a team. The penny will drop with most of them in the coming few weeks of the season once they have had some games under their belt. Hope you have fun!!!
